Today I was forcibly taken to the Broadway musical, Memphis. I was not expecting to like it, since I am not a play person, however it was surprisingly good.
Memphis is a musical about a white man, Huey Calhoun, who starts the first integrated radio station in Memphis, Tennessee. He becomes very successful and comes out of poverty. He falls in love with Felicia Farrell. Though, since she is a black woman, they cannot get married. Memphis is set in the 1950s and deals with segregation and racial barriers. Huey breaks barriers and becomes so successful that he gets a TV show. Huey is a weird and funny character who made the play more enjoyable.

There are many different theories about the origins of the belt system. One of them is that the student would start with a white belt and then it would be dyed as the student increased in skill. This makes sense because the belts gradually get darker in color. The second theory is that you would train with the same belt and the more you trained, the dirtier it would get. By the time you reach the black belt status, your belt would already be black from dirt.
